Our team had the opportunity of attending the MAGIC Fashion Trade Show, in Las Vegas. The event was a dazzling one with fashionistas, designers, retailers, and all kinds of industry professionals. They all came to show off their latest collections, meet potential buyers, brands, and manufacturers, and have some serious fun!
Imagine stepping into a wonderland of fashion where you can find the latest trends in apparel, home, footwear, and accessories for both men and women. That was what MAGIC was all about! The event had the brightest colors, the boldest prints, and the most fabulous trends that would definitely make any fashion enthusiast go gaga!
Before I tell you about our team’s experience at MAGIC, let me tell you a bit about the trade show itself. The MAGIC Fashion Trade Show is a bi-annual event that takes place in Las Vegas, Nevada, and is one of the most prominent fashion trade shows in the world. Informa Markets organized the event and they help bring together the entire fashion industry under one roof.
The trade show features several different sub-events that one can explore, each catering to different segments of the fashion industry like MAGIC Men’s, PROJECT, WWDMAGIC, POOLTRADESHOW, and SOURCING AT MAGIC. Here, one can discover emerging fashion brands and designers, high-end fashion labels, and textile and apparel manufacturers from around the world. But it’s not just about the exhibitors! The event has fashion shows, installations, experiential stalls, seminars, workshops, and a lot more, and one can truly experience fashion at its best!
Moving on to our experience at MAGIC, it was truly breathtaking. Our founder, Ms. Shweta Agrawal, and our Sales Head, Mr. Sandeep Verma attended the event. They witnessed the stalls put up by various exhibitors from around the world like China, Vietnam, Bangladesh, and India. They not only got to see the apparel & accessories that the countries had to offer but also learnt so much about the business side of the fashion industry, from marketing and branding to supply chain management and sustainability.
They also connected with like-minded individuals who shared a passion for fashion. From fellow attendees to exhibitors and vendors, everyone was so friendly and welcoming, and it definitely helped in making some valuable connections that we hope to maintain for years to come. They got to discuss with them the future of this industry, sourcing low MOQs, the stand of Indian manufacturers in the industry, and a lot more.
MAGIC was a great event for large-scale manufacturers and buyers. But for a company like ours which particularly specializes in helping small to medium-scale buyers, we felt that there were a lot of limitations. This is what our founder, Ms. Shweta Agarwal had to say about how MAGIC could be more accommodating for small-medium scale manufacturers and buyers.
“MAGIC was an amalgamation of buyers, brands, and manufacturers from all over the world. We met a lot of the participants and noticed that most of them were bigger established enterprises. It further got us thinking about the small manufacturers who have great products suitable for the US market but do not have the resources to come and participate in an event of this scale, especially when they are located overseas. We even met some smaller buyers who were looking at sourcing with lower MOQs, but they couldn’t find relevant manufacturers in such fairs. The only place they are able to meet such suppliers is online.”
Typically, small buyers’ source from online platforms like AliExpress, DHGate, and Alibaba. But a lot of such businesses are looking to diversify sourcing outside of China. All twenty start-ups gathered for a Boot Camp week at Google’s Bangalore office. There was a palpable buzz and excitement in the air from day one. We had access to a wealth of experience from within Google and outside on a multitude of topics that Start-ups wrestle with on a daily basis. Next to us was also a network of fellow start-up founders. We were all working on different problems but were united by the challenges that all start-ups face. Google structured this accelerator as a highly personalized program to deal with specific problems faced by each of the Start-ups. We jumped right in on day one with a diagnostic session with our mentors. We were able to pinpoint areas that were critical to us and where we needed help. This was followed by more in-depth sessions with experts. It was a great privilege to be part of the first cohort of Google’s Accelerator Program for Female Founders. Networking with other start-ups, helping each other solve problems really helped us.
Designed specifically for women-founded start-ups, the program addressed a variety of issues like social reasons, network access, access to capital, employment challenges, and mentoring, which are challenging to women. The session focused on many problems that arise due to the small number of representatives. There were also a lot of primer sessions on key topics including product, marketing, fundraising etc. which helped us in getting a broader perspective.
We realized the importance of defining the business and the operations from the customer point of view is one of the most important tasks any business has to focus on. The session on marketing made us think deeply about what are the paths to creating a blue ocean of a new market space. Case studies presented during the sessions explored in depth about strategic logic and methods of creating new market spaces using the blue ocean strategies. The sessions also gave us more insights about design thinking, the need of running design sprints often to understand the user experience and their journeys, rendering current competition, brand building and measuring the performance and most importantly the need of leaving physical evidence.
It wasn’t all work though, as we had ample opportunity to engage with each of our fellow start-ups and mentors and participate in some fun activities. Over the next few months as we dive deeper into the program, we expect to walk away with significant progress over some of the critical aspects of our business.
